“Heroes are made by the paths they choose, not the power they are graced with.” — Brodi Ashton

People tend to disparage themselves — they never value themselves enough. They do not realize how much they mean to those who are around and even to the world. When you hear the word ‘hero’, it sounds incredibly distant, unreachable, unattainable. For some reason, it is believed that a hero is an extraordinary person who stands out because s/he was given some power from above. As for me, this definition is totally inane. You are not BORN a hero, which is a perfectly blatant fact. To the contrary, once you step on the Earth, you have every chance to become one by making certain decisions or choices. This quote reflects my way of thinking peerlessly, that is why it drew my attention. I want people to realize that each one of them can become a hero, even if not worldly recognized.

2. “True heroism is remarkably sober, very dramatic. It is not the urge to surpass all others at whatever cost, but the urge to serve others, at whatever cost.” — Arthur Ashes

I suppose this quote captured my attention because it reflects Russian idea of a true hero. Sometimes we can hear that heroes are very lucky because they are praised and recognized. The image of a hero is implausibly romanticized which can be utterly misleading. I appreciate that Arthur Ashes points out that true heroism is remarkably sober. A true hero is ready to pay a price so that others can benefit from it.

Now, especially now, during the Covid pandemic, real heroes reveal themselves. They aren’t necessarily successful, rich or famous. They are not fighting and showing their braveness to be celebrated or acclaimed which is exactly what lets us call them heroes. They are putting their lives on the line by serving others.

I chose this quote because it erases all the delusions about being a hero and opens our eyes to the truth. How is your life useful if you are of no use to others?
